Dec 11-18, 2010 Shark Expedition

Dec 11 Guests boarded the boat this evening from all over the world including Russia, Brazil, France, French Polynesia and the US! Everyone seems very excited and ready for the trip! After they unpacked everything and got settled in, we departed for the Bahamas. The crossing was smooth.

Dec 12 After clearing customs we headed north to release turtles in the Gulf Stream as well as get to what I believe is the best area in the world for large sharks. In route, the winds picked up and the weather forecast changed so we headed east to Walkers Cay to escape a very large 2 day storm hopefully in the lee of an island where we could at least look for sharks and relax in comfort.

Dec 13 After spending the night in the lee of Walkers Cay after breakfast we actually pulled into the harbor which is closed down for many years now. Only the customs and immigration officers are there full time. Their was another boat escaping the storm as well which had 5 Bahamian fisherman aboard, They were all very nice and we invited them all to enjoy several meals with us. We were fortunate enough to be able to buy fresh conch from them, which our chef Mike cooked several different ways. It was all very delicious! Many of our guests were also treated to trying the “Pistol” from the conch with a description of what the “Pistol” will do for you in the high definition production for those of you that do not know what the pistol is.

After having no luck at Walkers attracting sharks, I moved the boat to Double Breasted Cay, where in years past I have had lots of sharks. We baited the area for 6 hours without any sign of sharks so we departed no that the seas have calmed down for my favorite shark area, the reefs around Tiger Beach.

Dec 15 This morning we started at a site I call Mt Mokarran, where on my first dive I enjoyed the company of a great hammerhead! Their were also six tigers, a dozen lemons and 25+ reef sharks. At the end of the day we moved to Tiger Beach!

Dec 16 This morning with perfect weather for the second day we enjoyed 9 tiger sharks with a dozen lemons and five reef sharks at Classic Tiger Beach! At the end of the dive, one of the guests claims he saw a great hammerhead as well.

Dec 17 On the first dive this morning at Tiger Beach we enjoyed at least 12 tiger sharks with a handful of lemon sharks. It was an absolutely stunning day. After lunch we moved to Ginormous, but the current was to strong so we left for Crystal Tiger. At Crystal Tiger we had five different tigers with a dozen lemon sharks during the day as well as the night dive. The wind picked up so we inland for a more peaceful sleep.

Dec 18 Our last day we started decided to go back to Classic Tiger Beach and try for some large numbers of tigers once again. Right away one of the guests saw a great hammerhead in the morning. Although the seas were high we had one of the most amazing dives because of the shear number of tiger sharks that were very close to us. 16 large tigers showed up and proceeded to leave us in a state of total appreciation for these magnificent creatures. A perfect ending for an incredible trip once again. Please watch the high definition video to see what type of imagery we capture each and every week. Every single image and video was shot during this weeks trip!

I hope all of you have a Happy Holiday with your family and friends!

Dec 28, 2010 Dive Report

So if you read the Dec 27th post your about to get your dive gear out and ready for this day! The air temperature finally let up and we went out to dive Juno Ledge. But we got reports of bad visibility so we ended up at Split Reef. This is one of our deeper reef systems (80 ft), and we saw lobster hanging out in the ledges there. The vis was okay (20 ft) but Captain Sean wanted to find us blue waters so we travelled south to the shallow reefs. Along the way we encountered 2 mola molas (sunfish) on the surface, but they were really shy and I couldn’t get any good photos of them.

Second dive was at the Trench. This was a first for me, the site actually has a trench that we follow along to the reef. And in this trench we had 2 huge nurse sharks, sea turtles, and lionfish. What a fun dive and the vis was much better (40 ft). After the dive we started heading home and was joined by a pod of 50 Spotted dolphin. They had a few babies with them and they were moving fast! We looked up and towards the shore and a big black back caught our eye…it was a WHALE! We stayed our distance so that we wouldn’t scare it and when it surfaced that double spout was easy to id…it was a North Atlantic Right Whale. This whale was probably 40 ft long and it was traveling north. What a neat encounter!!! Made my day!!!

Dec 27, 2010 Dive Report

Brrr its cold outside but that didn’t keep us from diving in Palm Beach! Great day to dive, the swells were 1-2ft, visibility 30 ft, and water temperature 68 degrees. We went to Ron’s Jump for our first dive. This is a nice reef in about 50ft with lots to see…eels, angelfish, and turtles. But during the dive the boat had a very rare surface sighting of a baby hammerhead shark. It surfed right over the diver’s bubbles. It was so quick we didn’t get a photo, however after the divers were up we spotted the same shark again surfing in the waves! So we got out the camera and boy was this shark posing! This hammerhead was acting like a dolphin, it even came up to the bow of the boat and used the pressure wave from the bow to ride for 2 mins then it dove. What an amazing site!

Our second dive was to Breaker’s reef. This reef is named after the famous Breaker’s Hotel which is directly inshore from this site. We see lots of neat creatures on this 50 ft dive, and today we found a small pencil urchin in a crack and under a ledge a great photo opt with a red fish called a Bigeye.
