Oceanic White Tip Expedition

For the past ten days we have been fortunate enough to run our 12th Oceanic White Tip Expedition! The trip was incredible with 6 to 15 oceanic white tip sharks every single day. We also were lucky enough to see a humpback whale, some beaked whales, marlin, sailfish, Dusky, lemon, tiger, reef, nurse and one blue shark. For the crew I must say that the selection of guests on board really made this an extremely memorable trip. The trip was also very inspirational drawing our attention to the ever present need for conservation of sharks worldwide. The oceanic white tip was once the most prolific fish in the sea according the Jacques Cousteau and today it is one of the most endangered.
I was in another excellent final cut pro class with George Schellenger of Sharktaskforce.com and because of this this blog is much shorter than usual. The best way to show you what it was like to be with these magnificent creatures is to watch the high def production! Please enjoy!

Salt Water Alligator

Palm Beach is known for its unique diving, but my recent dive really “turned it up a notch.” While guiding a group of divers from the end of Breaker’s reef to Turtle Mound I came across what at first looked like a huge stingray from a distance. Approaching closer I was elated to believe it was a salt water crocodile (one of the critters on my underwater photo bucket list), but a closer look proved it to be an alligator. “An alligator on Breaker’s reef down in 60ft of water?”, I questioned myself. The alligator was so perfectly placed and was neither moving or its eyes were open. The next vision in my mind was that of my friends laughing at such a well planned hoax.

To play along with the joke I took a couple of photographs as I marveled at the extent my friends had gone to on this joke. After about a minute the gator moved one of its legs and its eyes opened. I could not believe it. This was the real thing! I quickly switched my camera to video mode and captured some footage of it as I knew no one would believe me, and I know Photoshop too well for a photograph to be believable.

Just goes to show you… You can dive the same spot every day for years and you’ll never see the same thing twice.
