The group of divers who fared with the bumpy seas were in for an extra special treat upon descending on Flower Gardens today. As soon as the group reached the bottom the large barrel sponges in the area appeared to be on fire as smoke plumed from inside their massive structure. What we were watching was the yearly sponge spawning event. Incredibly enough it occurred just three days off from last years.
While the spawning event made a muck of the visibility everyone seemed intrigued by it except for a grumpy scorpion fish who found himself in the middle of what appeared like a snow slurry. Who says it doesn’t snow in Florida? With little to no current the group had the opportunity to take a closer look at the reef and all its inhabitants. Eels of all kinds were seen, but the goldentail morays appeared to have taken center stage with multiple appearances.
Breakers reef was just as spectacular, although the sponges in this area weren’t spawning at the time. A large male loggerhead turtle watched the group from a distance while it cohorts of cleaners shinned his shell. Overall the day’s diving was quite spectacular and the group of divers appeared to have enjoyed every second of it as their smiles and excitement of the dives never left their faces.
