Subscribe via RSSIn the middle of October I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the amazing Galapagos islands. This trip offered me the opportunity to see many creatures I had not seen before plus I was very hopeful to see some whale sharks and the large schools of scallop hammerhead sharks.
Unfortunately, it appears the stresses of overfishing for the dreaded shark fin soup is really having a great impact on the sharks of the Galapagos. Based on testimonies from individuals who had visited these islands in the past years, the scallop hammerhead population has dwindled to less than one fifth of what it was just last year alone.
Although the populations of many fish was way down I was still amazed by the biodiversity of life that can be found on these tiny islands in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Below are a number of photographs from my trip.
